Performs respiratory therapy procedures and provides invasive and noninvasive therapeutic and diagnostic services to patients.

Performs patient assessments utilizing pulmonary diagnostics, blood gases, chest radiograph, hemodynamic values, laboratory values, and correlates blood gases and electrolytes. May also perform pulmonary function diagnostic procedures.

Operates specialized ventilators in critical care and non-critical care venues. Assists physician with bedside or other procedures as applicable to facility.

Provides medication treatments per physician order and/or patient driven respiratory protocols (PDRP's) via nebulizer or inhaler as prescribed.

Assesses patient's cardiopulmonary status, utilizing PDRP's and recommends changes in treatment to facilitate best patient outcomes. Identifies and addresses the special needs of patients in critical care settings.

Sets up and monitors continuous positive airway pressure machines (CPAP's) and noninvasive ventilators. Assists with transport of invasively and non-invasively ventilated patients.

Cleans, maintains and ensures proper working of equipment, troubleshooting problems as necessary and identifying the need for service and/or repair.

Educates and instructs patients in purpose, technique, self-care, goal of therapy, and disease management.

Documents patient diagnoses and objectives on the patient record sheet utilizing the hospital's information system and enters patient's information and charges.

Scheduled Hours

Every other weekend. Variable shifts: 8hr days, 8hr pms, 12hr days, 12hr nights. Call is required

Licenses & Certifications

Respiratory Care Practitioner license issued by the state of Wisconsin, and

Respiratory Therapist certification (CRT) issued by the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) needs to be obtained within 1 year, or

Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) issued by the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) needs to be obtained within 1 year.

Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers certification issued by the American Heart Association (AHA) needs to be obtained within 6 months unless department leader has determined it is not required.


Associate's Degree in Respiratory Therapy.

Effective organizational, interpersonal and problem solving skills. Problem solving and decision making for patient care and equipment use. Basic computer skills.
