Under the supervision of the Cardiopulmonary Services Medical Director and Department Director, the Respiratory Care Practitioner is responsible for providing cardiopulmonary care services in accordance with specific physician's orders, department policies and procedures.


ASSESSMENT: Performs patient assessment and proper documentation. Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of the differences in techniques and treatment modalities as performed on patients of varying ages and ability to administer. Provides thorough knowledge of respiratory medications as they relate to various patients. Provides education to patient and family when appropriate. Communicates clearly with patient, family, physician, and staff. Provides proper documentation and assuring its accuracy.

TIME ORGANIZATION: Appropriately organizes work by following established treatment times to organize work and deliver therapy within appropriate time frame. Organizes work by prioritizing care and management of workload to efficiently deliver assigned patient care during the work shift.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS: Maintains knowledge and skills of the various methods of oxygen delivery, oxygen concentrations as they relate to various patients, including necessary equipment. Remains alert, assesses possible side effects to oxygen delivery. Performs O2 rounds and proper documentation. Performs O2 saturation studies, ETCO2, arterial blood draw (minimum of 3 per year) for blood gas analysis and understands the possible complications and contraindications associated with the procedure. Follows proper documentation.

CRITICAL CARE/VENTS: Sets up and monitors invasive and non-invasive ventilators and the associated critical care duties required for such treatment, such as airway management and tracheal suctioning. Provides optimal care by the continuum of patient assessment, physician interaction and by recommending and adjusting therapy as needed. Completes proper documentation.

TESTING: Performs EKG, stress testing and Holter monitors and has a knowledge of basic arrhythmias, follows proper documentation. Performs basic Pulmonary Function screen and identifies whether patient are below their norm and performs proper documentation.

EMERGENCY: Must successfully perform Code Blue skills including intubations during emergent and stressful situations.

Performs order entry functions, orders verification, therapy and assessment documentation and follows respiratory therapist driven protocols. Maintains a thorough knowledge of all departmental forms, flow charts, logbooks and their proper usage.

SAFETY: Manages and operates equipment safely and correctly. Inspects and tests respiratory therapy equipment to ensure equipment is functioning safely and efficiently, notifies appropriate personnel of any and all malfunctions. Follows departmental equipment sterilization and maintenance procedures. Maintains clean and safe work area.

SPECIALIZED DUTIES: Performs added duties such as PI, Pulmonary Function Testing, Cardiac Stress Testing, EEG testing, BLS, ACLS, PALS, NRP Instructor, and other outreach programs as designated. (List below in comments which apply to individual)

EDUCATION: Maintains file of in-services, competencies, certifications, licensure, CEUs, tests, etc. Attends inservices.


  • Education: Graduate of a Respiratory Program.
    Licensure: Missouri License.
    Experience: Attended clinical hours during school to graduate.
    Certifications: Certified eligible Respiratory Therapist, certified within 6 months of hire. BLS Healthcare Provider within three months of hire. Advanced Cardiac Life Support within six months of hire. Pediatric Life Support within six months of hire. NRP within one year of hire.
    Other: Knowledge of and student clinical time with patient assessments, various therapies, arterial blood gas draws, initiate and maintain invasive and non-invasive ventilation, code blue experience, intubations. Labor and Delivery experience, Pediatric experience, PFTs, Holters, ECGs, and Cardiac Stress tests. Interpersonal, analytical, and organizational skills.
    Preferred Education: Graduate of an Accredited Respiratory Program.
    Preferred Licensure: Missouri License.
    Preferred Experience: Minimum of one year.
    Preferred Certifications: Certified Respiratory Care Practitioner, AHA HCP Basic Life Support, AHA Advanced Cardiac Life Support, AHA Pediatric Advanced Life Support, and NRP
    Preferred Other: Excellent interpersonal, analytical, and organizational skills are required to evaluate patient reactions to all forms of respiratory therapy, recommend corresponding treatment plans and interact with patients, physicians, and nursing staff. Able to perform arterial blood gas draws and intubations. Labor and Delivery experience, Pediatric experience, Advanced Life Support experience, PFTs, Holters, ECGs, and Cardiac Stress tests.
