Job Summary
  • Assist individual patients to improve their ability to perform tasks in living and working environments. Occupational Therapistswork with individuals who suffer from a mentally, physically, developmentally, or emotionally disabling condition, while assessing and modifying treatment plans to achieve the highest level of function. They will use treatments to develop, recover, or maintain the daily living and work skills of their patients. The therapists help clients not only to improve their basic motor functions and reasoning abilities, but also to compensate for permanent loss of function with the goal to help clients have independent, productive, and satisfying lives.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Education/Experience
    • Bachelors or Mastersin Occupational Therapy
  • License/Certification/Registration
    • Maryland State Occupational Therapy License
    • BLS obtained within 90 days of hire and maintained throughout employment
  • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
    • Ability to comprehend and follow the policies and procedures for MedStar Health and MedStar Southern Maryland Hospital Center.
    • Ability to read, write and speak or communicate in English to successfully accomplish the essential duties of the position.

    • Give instructions and education in therapeutic procedures, postural control and safety.
    • Ability to provide training and supervision in therapy techniques and objectives for student, nurses and other medical staff.
    • Ability to evaluate patient’s functional, psychological as well as sensory deficits and abilities.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
  • Thoroughly evaluates patient's functional performance, capacities, abilities, and deficits in activities of daily living, motor and psychological skills, and sensory integration.
  • Planstherapy programs for patients that address goals in ADL performance through useof therapeutic exercise, manual therapy and modalities as indicated.
  • Recommend changes in patients’ work or living environment consistent with their needs and capabilities
  • Demonstrates competency in adaptive equipment and techniques, manualtherapy, orthotic management and ADL training appropriate to the patient’sidentified needs.
  • After one year of experience, serve as a clinical instructor for OT students.
  • Frequently collaborates with physicians, nurses, other team and family members to discuss patient care and discharge planning.
  • Recordsand reports patient progress in the medical record. Provides accurate billinginformation on the same days as the service is provided.
  • Provides educational information about occupational therapy, injury prevention, ergonomics and ways to promote health.
  • Educatespatients and family members regarding the occupational therapy plan of care,discharge recommendations, and appropriate home programs. Documents educationin the patient record.
  • Direct and supervise supportive personnel, assessing their competence delegating specific tasks to them and establishing channels of communication.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
